The LZR PIORUN project is being implemented by the Air Force Institute of Technology (ITWL), Division Z-14, in a consortium with MESKO S.A. and CRW Telesystem–MESKO Sp. z o.o.

The objective of the project is to develop and produce an aerial missile system designed for integration with rotary-wing platforms. The system will utilize domestically produced PIORUN man-portable air-defense missiles (MANPADS). It will provide helicopters with the capability to engage hostile airborne targets within the effective range of PIORUN missiles.
As a result of the project, a helicopter-mounted air-defense missile system will be developed. The system will comprise newly designed components allowing the suspension, control, and launch of PIORUN missiles from helicopters. The system includes tube launchers adapted for rotary-wing aircraft operational environments and conditions.
PIORUN missiles are manufactured in Poland by MESKO S.A. The technological solutions introduced under this project represent a new class of capabilities within the domestic defense industry and are currently deployed in only a few countries worldwide. At present, PIORUN systems are used exclusively by ground-based operators and integrated into ground-based air defense platforms.
The integration of this technology with helicopters will significantly enhance their engagement and targeting capabilities against aerial threats, including helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), within the missile's effective range.
