In the ITWL Fuels and Lubricants Materials Division, research and development activities have been carried out for several years based on the use of a model turboshaft jet engine test stand in the area of applying synthetic hydrocarbon components.
The existing research infrastructure has recently been expanded with a micro gas turbine test stand with a dedicated hydrogen line, allowing for research related to the co-firing process of aviation fuel with hydrogen.
The test stand will be used for comparative studies of the operation of a model turboshaft engine powered by various proportions of aviation fuel and hydrogen. Basic engine operating parameters and emissions of gas combustion products will be recorded and analyzed. Additionally, the test stand provides the ability to monitor the technical condition of hot structural elements of the turboshaft engine (combustion chamber and turbine) through borescopic inspections.
The modern equipment will directly enhance the Institute's capabilities to conduct scientific and research work as well as projects in the field of applying hydrogen as an alternative propulsion source for turboshaft engines.
